POLICY GUIDELINES
Recommendations for In-School Birthday Celebrations

Non-food Ways to Celebrate

    • Pencils
    • Erasers
    • Stickers
    • Bookmarks
    • Party trinkets
    • Donate a book to the school library or classroom in honor of the child’s birthday with a personalized gift acknowledgement plate inside
    • Donate playground/physical activity equipment – jump ropes, balls, etc.
    • Celebrate with games chosen by the student
    • Have a dance party
    • Engage students in a special art project
    • Go for a fun run with the principal or local hero (fireman, major athlete)

Healthy Snack Ideas

Food Items*

Foods served to the class must meet certain criteria:

    • No baked goods from home
    • Cookie Tray available through Food Service (see attached order form)
    • 10 grams of fat or less in snack foods
      • Two ounces for chips, crackers, popcorn, cereal, trail mix, dried fruit, or jerky
      • Two ounces for cookies
      • Two ounces for cereal bars, granola bars, muffins, bagels, and other bakery items;
      • Mini muffins, banana bread slices
      • Mini cupcakes or angel cake, very lightly frosted, sprinkles or plain
    • Ice cream/yogurt products will be 8 grams of fat or less
      • Four fluid ounces for frozen desserts, including, but not limited to low-fat or fat-free ice cream
      • Eight ounces for non-frozen yogurt;
    • Twenty fluid ounces or less for beverages, excluding water
      • Juices will be only 100% real fruit juice
      • Soda is not allowed
    • Fresh fruit tray – whole, wedges, slices (dip in orange juice to retain color)
    • Fresh vegetable tray (baby carrots, grape tomatoes, celery sticks, cucumber spears, red and green pepper strips, cauliflower and broccoli florets) with reduced fat ranch or yogurt-based dip
    • String cheese, cheese cubes or slices with whole grain crackers
      • All items must be purchased and comply with portion size and fat content
      • ALL CELEBRATIONS:  No baked goods from home
